Yambo, a sixty-ish rare book dealer who lives in Milan has suffered a loss of memory; not the kind of memory neurologists call `semantic` (Yambo remembers all about Julius Caesar and can recite every poem he has ever read), but rather his `autobiographical` memory: he no longer knows his own name, doesn`t recognize his wife or his daughters, doesn`t remember anything about his parents or his childhood.His wife, who is at his side as he slowly begins to recover, convinces him to return to his

family home in the hills somewhere between Milan and Turin. Yambo promptly retreats to the sprawling attic, cluttered with boxes of newspapers, comics, records, photo albums and adolescent diaries. Umberto Eco /um�?bɛrto �?ɛ�?ko/; ur. 5 stycznia 1932 w Alessandrii, zm. 19 lutego 2016 w Mediolanie – włoski semiolog, filozof, bibliofil i mediewista, powieściopisarz, autor felietonów i esejów. Sławę przyniosła mu powieść Imię róży 1980, dzieło łączące w sobie elementy semiotyki, badań biblijnych, analizy kultury średniowiecza i teorii literatury. Jego kolejne powieści, m.in. Wyspa dnia poprzedniego 1994 i Cmentarz w Pradze 2010, także stały się światowymi bestsellerami. Eco pisał także prace naukowe, książki dla dzieci i młodzieży, oraz eseje na temat teorii [>>] literatury, świata współczesnego, kondycji współczesnych mediów i nauki. Był profesorem na Uniwersytecie we Florencji oraz na Uniwersytecie w Bolonii. Zajmował się semiotyką/semiologią, procesami komunikacji i estetyką. Rozsławiła go twórczość beletrystyczna. Jego wielopłaszczyznowe i kunsztownie skonstruowane powieści mają cechy dzieła otwartego, stymulują odbiorcę do własnej interpretacji. Był także autorem felietonów, pierwotnie publikowanych w mediolańskim tygodniku „l’Espresso”, a następnie wydanych w zbiorach Zapiski na pudełku od zapałek.
