Urodziła się w Omaha w stanie Nebraska i wychowała w Council Bluffs w stanie Iowa. Jej książki są publikowane w około dwudziestu krajach. Ukończyła dziennikarstwo na University of Iowa. Członek stowarzyszenia byłych oficerów wywiadu, współzałożycielka International Thriller Writers. Była żoną innego znanego twórcy thrillerów, Dennisa Lyndsa, aż do jego śmierci w 2005 roku. Obecnie mieszka w stanie Maine z mężem Johnem C. Sheldonem.
