James Patterson należy do ścisłej czołówki najpopularniejszych autorów amerykańskich; obok książek Dana Browna, Johna Grishama i Stephena Kinga jego powieści najczęściej pojawiają się na światowych listach bestsellerów. Sławę przyniósł mu wydany w 1993 roku thriller Along Came the Spider zekranizowany jako W sieci pająka, z Morganem Freemanem w roli głównej.
